ROYAL HOLLOWAY INTERNATIONAL BUILDING

Client Royal Holloway University of London
Architect ECD

Royal Holloway International Building is approximately 3000m² comprising a combination of office space, computer rooms, conference rooms and language labs and laboratories.

The building has been designed to have low energy construction and running costs including incorporating cross ventilation cooling through the hollow core slabs which form part of the structure. The hollow cores are cooled at night in the summer using mechanically operated dampers on the façade of the building.

All elements of the building have been considered in terms of their environmental impact. The general principle of the building is using its mass for cooling in summer and being highly insulated to prevent heat loss in winter. Careful consideration has been given to the selection of lighting system, lighting controls and choice of lamp to ensure minimum energy wastage.

A key object of the design takes into account minimum maintenance impact to the University Maintenance Department.
