Zero Carbon Hierarchy

Fulcrum publishes ‘dream definition’ of zero carbon buildings

Fulcrum were heavily involved in the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) report published last May on the ‘Definition of zero carbon’. This report directly informed the current Government consultation on ‘the definition of zero carbon homes and non-domestic buildings’. While we support the hierarchical approach proposed in recognition that ‘zero carbon’ is often not possible with on-site measures alone, we are disappointed that the proposals do not fully reflect the recommendations of the UK-GBC report. Ultimately we believe that this means the end result will stop short of achieving the GHG emissions reductions the UK built environment has been tasked with.

In order to actively encourage further discussion, we have written a short statement setting out how we would define ‘zero carbon buildings’ if it were up to us.

Debating ‘Zero Carbon’: The Allowable Solutions

As part of Fulcrum’s 2009 debate series, March sees us discussing the recent Government consultation on ‘the definition of zero carbon homes and non-domestic buildings’. We expect a lively debate around the hierarchical approach proposed by Government and the list of ‘allowable solutions’ on offer to achieve ‘zero carbon’ status. The event will be held in our London office on March 11th from 6pm.
